Today's Devotional

Discipline, Character and Hope

Rom 5:3-5: "but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us (NASU).

When our children suffer, whether from their own bad choices or those of someone else, we want so badly to rescue them from the pain or to tell them how to avoid finding themselves in that predicament again.

But, God has another plan - to perfect them through their trials. Character building lessons are rarely learned from the triumphs of life. Rather, it is the trials in our lives that teach us how to persevere despite the pain. Taking trials away from our kids deprives them of the chance to grow, build character and learn to hope in God.

The best character-building lessons are learned from trials. Try not to inhibit your child's growth by rescuing or taking over a difficult situation.

Ever checked out HOUSE PARTY?

HOUSE PARTY is a ton of fun. All you have to do is apply to host a party and wait to see if you're chosen!

I did the Velveeta party and Barilla pasta party last year and we had a blast. If you're chosen, a box of goodies is sent to you, to help you host your party! For the Barilla party, we received coupons for free jars of Barilla sauce, boxes of pasta, an Italian music cd, favors to give out at the party, a guide to Italy, wine glass charms and more!

You do all of your party planning on the House Party website and when the party is over, you can update pictures from your event.
I applied to approximately 10 different parties last year and was chosen for 2 of them. Worth the try!

Go HERE to check out their website and the current parties you can apply for.
I just applied for Oscar Mayer and Hasbro Game Night!

Words - Do They Matter?

James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.

I heard a teenager from a Christian family declare, "My mom doesn't think swear words are bad." He then indicated which words she found acceptable - words that have long been considered inappropriate. Society's standard of language has declined in recent years, but we don't have to decline with it.
As we strive to be "very careful...how [we] live" (Eph 5:15 NIV), we should think about how to honor God with our words.
We please the Lord with our tongue when we show discernment. "He who restrains his lips is wise," Proverbs 10:19 reminds us.
When we do speak, we are to filter the words that escape our lips: "Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles" (21:23).
It is important to use kind, positive words - even to address tough subjects. "A harsh word stirs up anger," but "the tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly" (Prov 15:1-2).
Finally, avoid words that reflect poorly on who we are as God's children. Paul's admonition to "let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth" (Eph 4:29) sets a strong standard for the righteous use of words.
To honor God in each part of life, use words that are pleasing and acceptable to a holy God. -Dave Branon, Our Daily Bread devotional

This devotional probably speaks to a lot of us, including myself. I do not use swear words, but other words can be just as hurtful and harsh. I do want to honor God in each part of my life and to do so, I need to make sure my tongue is tamed.

What did you do on this blessed Sunday?

We went to Sunday School for the kids, Bible Study for us, then church
for us all.
Hubby had to go to work after church, but the kids and I had
a nice picnic out by the creek.

We took out a big quilt and the 4 of us had a great time, just watching
the chipmunks
hop on the rocks, the wrens flying back & forth to the
feeder, observing insects and watching the clouds float by.
Talk about
relaxing! And God blessed us with another beautiful day, yet again.
Thank you, Lord!

What's For Dinner At Our House

Tonight's dinner is passed down from my Dad.
We grilled out 'Pop Pop burgers' and served them up with some steamed broccoli.
Pop Pop Burgers are made as follows, with no exact measurements:

1 1/2 lbs ground sirloin
Approximately 1/2 cup bread crumbs
Approximately 1/2 cup diced onions
Approximately 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 egg
salt, pepper

Mix and form into patties. Grill!

What do you like on your burgers?
Anything different like bean sprouts, won ton noodles, french fries?
We're pretty traditional here, cheese, ketchup, mayo or BBQ sauce.

Homeschool Resources & Entertainment for your wee ones!

We do not watch television in our home, but the kids do get to watch some DVD's here and there.

Our kids love BOZ the Bear! http://www.bozthebear.com/home.asp
Through fun stories and sing a longs, BOZ teaches many wonderful lessons in a faith based manner. There are stories about eating healthy, exercise, Colors and Shapes, ABC's and 123's just to name a few.

All stories put emphasis on the family bond with the children Drew & Gracie and their parents. You'll see how they are involved in their church, serve others in their community and teach the children to pray. BOZ also has a great Christmas DVD for purchase, all about celebrating our Savior's Birth.

The website has games, coloring pages and EVEN free lesson plans (great for homeschooling a preschooler)!
http://www.bozthebear.com/church/

Check out the website and preview a few episodes to see why we Love Boz in our house and we know you will too! You can purchase the DVD's on the site or possibly at a Christian Book Store. We ordered ours from straight from their site.
Good, wholesome entertainment reinforcing God's word.

Daily Devotion

1 Timothy 4:7 Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.

Pride, fear, resentment, and habit are all tough evidences of the flesh.
But those who are being shaped into the image of Christ do not go the way of the flesh.

Women and men of God do not manipulate events so that they can be pleased and get what they want.
That's why God crushes pride, removes fear, breaks into resentment, and changes long-standing habits until the whole inner being is renovated...until we rest in our God and are ready for His will, not ours, to be done.
(Bedside Blessings, Charles Swindoll)

Simple and Affordable Fun!

Genesis 1:1 God created the heavens and the earth... and God saw that it was good.

There is a lot of fun to be had, right in your own backyard!
Our fun usually turns into a home school lesson, with our inquisitive 6 year old.
We played in our creek for quite a while today.

We explored under rocks and found one covered in what appeared to be fly larvae. We found flat rocks to begin building our fire ring (summer campfires are right around the corner!). We excavated some larger rocks from a section of the creek to make a wading pool for the kids.

I love just standing back and watching their imaginations and curiosities run wild. They slowly lift a rock, to peek underneath. They try to pick up the heaviest rocks they can find, they find rocks with bits of color throughout them and some that they believe are the fossils of a long, lost creature.

So go find a creek or stream the kids can cool off in and explore. They may find some interesting rocks, newts, minnows, or crayfish and they'll definitely find some fun!
Pure and simple fun, provided by God's creation.

Enjoy our pictures from this afternoon!

What's For Dinner At Our House

~Chicken Caesar Salad~

Caesar Salad Dressing:

2 cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tsp Worcestershire
2 clove of garlic (minced)
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 c Parmesan cheese
2 tbsp of milk
Mix all ingredients together and shake or whisk until well blended.

Preparing the chicken:
Cut up 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts into cubes.
Place 1/4 of the dressing (above recipe) in a ziplock and
marinade the cut upchicken in it, for an hour. Skewer the chicken
pieces and grill. Turn frequently and baste.

In a large bowl, toss Romaine with dressing. Serve and top with a
skewer of chicken and grate fresh Parmesan over top of all.

My daughter makes some wonderful garlic bread to go with this.
She slices Italian bread and broils on low. When toasty brown,
she spreads olive oil on top and rubs with a fresh garlic clove.

Today's Devotional

Matthew 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Two well-bred, blue-blooded dogs were walking primly along the street with their noses held high. They encountered a big scruffy dog who obviously was of the Heinz-57-Varieties pedigree. At first they tried daintily to side step the friendly alley dog, but they were unable to do so. He was eager to make friends and trotted alongside them. One of the lady dogs said, "We really must go," to which the alley dog replied, "Well, All right, but first tell me your names so I'll know what to call you dames if I see you again." The purebred replied haughtily, "My name is Miji, spelled M-I-J-I." The other said daintily, "My name is Miki, spelled M-I-K-I.""Pleased to meet you," said the low-class dog, and then he added, "My name is Fido, spelled P-H-Y-D-E-A-U-X."
Home should be a place where there is no room for pride. Respect and self-dignity, yes, but haughty arrogance born of position? No! Respect your little ones and serve them. Honor your elders and give your best to them. Don't play favorites in relationships, or allow a child to think he is favored. Ultimately, home should be a place marked by "equal-opportunity love."
(God's Little Devotional Book for Moms)
